The Old Cemetery

This cemetery is the most beautiful necropolis in Tarnów, it was created around 1790 as the emperor Jozef II decided to ban further burial in the city centre. The place chosen was located outside of the city in Zabłocie quarter. In 1800, not long after its establishment, it was partially surrounded from the North and East with a curved late-baroque style wall, which was continued to be developed, basing on the original shape. 

 

The oldest gravestone belongs to Anna Karolina Radziwiłłowa of Lubomirscy, who died in 1795. However, the most famous is the insurrectionist mound, that is meant to honour those fell in the 1863 January Rising. In the plates the names of the fallen heroes were carved, as well as their squad and the place of their death. After 28 years after the failed rising, local people on multiple graves of the insurgents, put up a mound of broken branches, on the front of which they placed emblems of Poland, Lithuania and Russia on one coat of arms.

 

Before the insurrectionist mound stands a magnificent gravestone of Rufin Piotrkowski. If we follow the main alley path, we shall see Dukes Sanguszkowscy’s chapel and many other beautiful, although mainly concrete statues and chapels.
